Just came across this 4 minute video about the real Downton Abbey: Highclere Castle.

  2. Did you see that Brian Williams had a spot about it on last night's news?

  3. How the other half lives....

How fun to see this! I had wondered if that portrait were Charles I - nice to have the suspicion confirmed.

How do they keep that living room WARM? The ceilings are dreadfully high...

Thanks for posting, Ginnie. I see that DA2 is up on pbs.org already so we'll be watching tonight. Can't wait to see the clothes (it's my favourite fashion era).

  4. Not having watched Downton Abbey I can't comment on it, but in response to Mrs Micawber's question about how they heated it, I can tell you. I went to a boarding school that had once been a mid-Victorian mansion, and it still had its lovely ornate cast iron radiators and a huge furnace in the basement.

We froze from September to Christmas, thawed out in the holidays at home, and returned to school to re-freeze till Easter. For the rest of the year, we were merely chilled to the bone.....
